Abstract

To evaluate the hemodynamic effects of respiratory depressants such as morphine, pancuronium and diazepam during mechanical ventilation in the ICU, hemodynamic data were obtained using the thermodilution method prior to each agents use and at 1, 5 and 20 minutes after drug administration. The subjects were mainly post open-heart surgery cases. Their mean age was 54.25¡¾ l.73 years.
The paitients were divided into three groups, e.g, morphine(0.l mg /kg, n= 10), pancuronium(0. 05 mg/kg, n= 10) and diazepam(0. 1 mg/kg, n= 10).
The results were as follows:
1) Prior to each agents use and 1, 5 and 20 minutes after drug administration between the various groups at the respective time periods, there was no significant statistical differences in hemodynamic data.
2) During the study period none of the patients fought the ventilator under the dosages which were administered in the study.
In regards to the administration of respiratory depressants during mechanical ventilation, the preceding data suggests that each of he agents in the prescribed dosages could be used safely with no ventilator fighting.
